From Spartan basketball games to national concert tours and everything in between, the Breslin Center hosts hundreds of events each year. For Elizabeth Trexler, this year’s Underwood Scholarship recipient, this variety is what makes her job so interesting.
Elizabeth has worked at the Breslin Center as a member of the production staff since September 2005. As coordinating supervisor of production staff, she is responsible for ensuring that every event is properly staffed. Working closely with Breslin’s Administrative Office, Elizabeth determines how many staff members will be required for each event, as well as their job duties. During the events, Elizabeth and the other supervisors patrol the arena ensuring that everything is running smoothly for their employees.
Elizabeth’s love for MSU motivates her in her day-to-day work. By providing guests with spectacular experiences at the Breslin Center, she hopes to cast a positive image of MSU in the greater community and draw more people to the University.
“If people have a good time while they are visiting MSU and receive outstanding customer service, hopefully when they hear about another concert, game or anything happening here in the future, they’ll want to return,” explains Elizabeth.
Elizabeth works hard to motivate her staff to provide an exemplary level of customer service.
“We really emphasize to our staff that we’re usually the first people someone sees when they come into the building and the last people they see before they leave,” she states. “We are the people who can provide guests with that outstanding Spartan service.”
Elizabeth’s supervisor, Noreen Marriott, manager of Operations and Technical Services, has nothing but good things to say about Elizabeth’s work.
“Liz is thorough, accurate, dependable and cheerful,” says Noreen. “Her work has a huge impact on the experience our patrons have when they visit our facility.”
Although she works an average of about 25 hours a week at the Breslin Center, Elizabeth still finds time to be actively involved in many other areas of campus. She is currently a junior working towards a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, dual majoring in economics and specializing in peace and justice studies. Putting her math skills to good use, Elizabeth serves as an undergraduate teaching assistant for two math classes and is also a math tutor. In addition, she is a member of the MSU Dance Club and next year will be serving as the president of Kappa Delta Pi, the honors education society. She even manages to maintain a 3.8 GPA!
After graduation, Elizabeth plans to become a high school math teacher. Inspired by her grandmother and her mother, who are both educators, she hopes to instill a passion for math in her students.
“Math can be a very interesting and rewarding subject if introduced properly and with appropriate motivation,” said Elizabeth. “I hope to be able to inspire young minds to consider continuing their studies of math, science and engineering in higher education.”
Congratulations, Elizabeth and best of luck in your continued endeavors!
